APPEARANCE

Appearance:
Amycus is not a nice-looking person. He's short and on the heavy side and even his clothes look questionable, which isn't helped by his hunched over appearance. Some people have probably considered the possible that Amycus is the result of a bad transfiguration job from a pig to a human. Indeed, he has a face that brings to mind an ill-tempered pig. He has a pale complexion and small, dark eyes. His hair is a non-descript brown and usually kept short, though badly cut. Personal appearance is quite obviously not on Amycus's list of priorities. His teeth appear to have never met a toothbrush, nor his hair a comb. His face seems to have been shaven by scissors that have been charmed to tap dance. Amycus's robes tend to be blood-stained, thanks to his penchant for killing pests (as is his job) in horrifically violent ways. It all adds up to an appearance that plainly says to most people, "do not touch with a 40 foot pole."

PERSONALITY
If you saw Amycus Carrow walking towards you on the street, you'd probably feel an inexplicable urge to give him as wide a berth as possible. That's how much he exudes unpleasantness. It's not just his appearance with his hunchedness and crooked smile. It's a just funny feeling that there is something not quite right with him. Which is completely true.

Amycus has lots of issues. He doesn't see it that way, but pretty much anyone he's not related to does. The biggest issue is a toss up between his temper or his violent streak. Combine the two and obviously, it's never pretty. Amycus does get to release some of his violent tendencies through his job of killing pests, but sometimes the little buggers don't cooperated. There's nothing Amycus hates more (okay, there's a few things he hates more) than getting outsmarted by vermin... which happens more than he'd like to admit. It's very easy to get him angry, and this of course, makes his blood boil. It's the one major downside to his career.

So yes, Amycus isn't the brightest crayon in the box. In fact, he's often downright stupid. The thing is, he doesn't really care much. Who needs smarts when you have wands and dark magic and things like that? He's done just fine, or so he thinks, this far in life, so obviously intelligence is overrated. Amycus is perfectly happy to let other people, like Alecto, do the planning and he'll do the execution... preferably, literally so.

This doesn't mean Amycus does have an ambitious streak. Like his sister, he really does, but he's also lazy. He's not above cheating or killing or whatever to get what he wants, though, so he figures sooner or later, he'll get it somehow. Sure there might be some who think they could take Amycus in a fight if it came to that, but the thing is that, after years of practice, he's quite adept at cheating, on top of everything else. He's definitely cowardly so if a fight or something isn't looking to be going well for him, he'll resort to cheating or he'll run away or somehow extract himself from the situation. The unfortunate thing is that all of this will prove to be to be useful to him in the future. But right now, being a Deputy Headmaster of Hogwarts is far beyond Amycus's desires.

Basically Amycus isn't a nice person unless you're family or you've earned his respect somehow. Not that many people care if they've earned his respect... but he thinks they should, dammit. He's even downright mean and sadistic to most people. But really, how can he expect to think highly of him when he's mostly a crude and unclassy... even creepy guy?

History:
Born just about 18 months after his sister, Alecto, to the noble house of Carrow (ha!), meant that the two were always very close. If they were purebloods, perhaps his arrival would have been a bigger deal, but Alecto was pretty much treated as a boy, anyway. Whether this is due to nurture or nature, Amycus will never know, nor does he care. He loves her just the way she is.

The two were pretty much allowed to run amok however they wanted. They didn't mind if he did things like kill rabbits. In fact, they probably would have preferred him to leave more meat on them so they could go in a nice stew. So, he grew up, like the rest of his family, with no knowledge of manners or propriety or anything like that. It can get a bit awkward with some of the Purists.

Eventually, the time came time for his sister to go off to school and he was a bit lost that year. But once he got to go, Hogwarts was in for a real treat. Amycus didn't spend much time studying, unlike his yearmates. Instead, he was giving swirlies and cursing people with boils and the like. Like his sister, he was no stranger to detention, though he often tried to talk his way out of it and blame other people for his actions. Then, Alecto left Hogwarts and he had another without his partner in crime. But at least he had his housemates this time. He also had his third year on the Quidditch team as a beater, which was a good outlet for him.

After he was done at Hogwarts himself, there was no question about him working at the Ministry, like his sister. However, a job in pest control seemed more interesting to him and he found that, indeed, he enjoyed it a lot. Perhaps it's not as useful to the cause as Alecto's job, but he has other uses.

He joined the Death Eaters with his sister not long after he'd left school, too. It was a natural choice since they could always use lackey-types like him. He enjoys being a Death Eater even more than his job. He doesn't mind just being told what to do because at least it usually involves something violent and sadistic. It doesn't hurt that there's a certain amount of power that comes along with being in that group. Amycus sees most of them as the right people to ingratiate himself to for some vague future grand scheme that Alecto probably has.
